Brett Dawson, Process engineer, change catalyst, futurist

The best way for you to chase your dreams, achieve your goals or make strategic changes to the way you earn a living is surprisingly similar to the way that engineers design and build space rockets and strategists influence the future. There is an art and science to personal change management and this is what I can teach you. It starts with being honest with yourself about your truth, thoroughly exploring your options, making informed decisions, balancing your risks and then having the courage to act on those decisions. You can improve your quality of life. You can make sustainable and ethical choices and find unconventional solutions to employment and lifestyle challenges. I’ll teach you how to think like an engineer, make strategic decisions, and put the systems and processes in place that will help you make things happen. You can be resourceful and live a life of harmony and wellbeing. Let’s get started…

What do you wish you could change?

How can I help?

What stage of the change cycle are you in? I will help you develop a transition strategy that will support you through all three stages of the change and transition process.

Change & Transitions

Part of my career development journey has required me to move cities nine times, relocate from South Africa to Europe and in the process, I have worked in four different industries and experienced three retrenchments. Every single change I have been through has progressed through the same cycle and rollercoaster ride of emotions. I’m a bit of a philosopher and like to know how and why things work the way they do. Now that I deeply understand these change and transition challenges I am able to help you and others through any change cycle you may be experiencing.

Career and job changes

I have worked in four different industries and changed my role many times. Almost every job change I have made has required a move to a different city, and just over ten years into my career I relocated from South Africa to the U.K. If you’re reading this it’s probably because you don’t want to do the same thing for the rest of your career. I can teach you how to make strategic changes and avoid ‘random opportunity drift’. If your change journey is exclusively about career development and ways of earning a living then have a look at https://careerstaratlas.com/

Studying and learning new skills

The most important skill to master in a world of constant change is the ability to adapt and this relies on your ability to learn. Learning is one of my top five talents based on the CliftonStrengths assessment I performed a few years ago. I did not perform consistently well in my engineering degree but this change when I studied for an MBA.  When I figured out why I had performed as well as I did on the MBA, I applied the same techniques to my next degree (an M.Phil in Future Studies) and achieve similar results.

Setting and achieving goals

Unless you make a concerted effort to change something in your life everything will stay the same. If you are unhappy with something or would like to improve your quality of life then you can start by setting a goal (or multiple goals). Every year I do an assessment of the previous year and set myself goals to achieve in the next year. My productivity system, based on the GTD methodology, is fully aligned to help me achieve these goals. If you want to know more then let me know using the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Travelling, sabbaticals and retreats

The most important changes I have made in my life and career have always been preceded by a retreat or a sabbatical. This has become such an important part of my lifestyle that I now plan and facilitate retreats with other people to help them on their journey. If you’re interested in going on a retreat have a look at this page: https://careerstaratlas.com/retreats/

Always make the most of your circumstances

At the end of 2008 during the financial crisis, I was laid off from a job in the renewable energy industry. It had taken me three years to switch my career focus from Oil & Gas to Renewables as I wanted to work on climate change solutions rather than being part of the problem. After a few months of unsuccessful job searching in a desperate economic climate, I realised I had an opportunity to do things that I would not normally be able to do if I was employed in a full-time role. So, I packed my bags and joined some friends in South America for a six-week Sabbatical that included visiting Machupicchu and bundu-bashing (hiking) the Inca trail, the “w” route around Patagonia, various walks in Terra del Fuego and a trip to Mt Fitzroy. When I got back home I completed a mini-thesis for a Masters degree that had stalled and wrote the first draft of my first science fiction novel. I taught myself how to edit videos and create websites. It’s amazing what you can achieve in six months when you set your mind to it.

Then I started looking for work again and that’s where things got tough.
